From June to October of each year, the sand banks of many places inside the National Reserve, are used by river turtles -Podocnemis- to lay their eggs.

Every adult specimen can lay up to 45 eggs per nest.

However, the high value that these eggs got in the markets in the cities today have come to be one of the most pursuited products by the illegal extractors who burst within the protected natural areas with the purpose to collect as many nests as they can find. If that were not enough, despite the high predation that this gender of turtles have been facing through their eggs, the shameless offenders also are seeking to capture the mother without giving them the slightest chance to reproduce next year.  To have the option to lay some eggs so that there may be a possibility that they can be hatched and have new adults five years later, and the specie will not get endagered.

Our company, in coordination with the central office of the SERNANP – National Service of Protected Areas - and in cooperation with the communities that are within Pacaya Samiria, have been working on projects for the management and conservation of our natural resources. During the dry season every year, we partake of small groups to go during the night and collect the turtles eggs -Podocnemis unifilis and Podocnemis expansa- and transport them in containers and re-nest them in artificial sand banks until they hatch. After hatching, they remain under our care for six weeks; enough time for the new generation of chelonians to be released in the nearby streams or lakes, giving them a highest probability percentage to reach out to reproduce and fulfill their life cycle.

However, they are not the only endangered species by man. It is also found in its list of predation, the giant sweet water fish, the Paiche -arapaima gigas - who for a decade have been indiscriminately preyed upon. That is why their population has declined dramatically, and significant. Within our work plans, we consider monitoring and managing this species of fish. Within our village operations territory, we have a place where fifteen mothers are reproducing each year from October to February. Last season, we stocked a lake with at least 20 000 juvenile arapaimas and we hope that at least 10% will become adults and these are the ones who can increase their population in the subsequent five years.

But our commitment to nature goes beyond preserving what we have left, and it is that we aim to restore what the ambition of the generation of the past century, foreign exploiter gave us as inheritance to the communities of the Amazon.

We have a great challenge, reforest part of our wetland forest with the majesty of the rubber trees. It is our greatest dream to achieve that future generations will be able to know what our grandparents knew and many of ourselves we did not see more than printed on a sheet of paper.

The Sernanp, our community, and specially, our company, you want to extensively thank you for having chosen us as your Tour Operator since this will allow to finance a large part of these projects that we have been developing.
