ITINERARY

 

DAY ONE 

We will depart to Nauta in the morning. It will take us almost 2 hours to get there. A small yet confortable wooden boar will be waiting for us there to take us to our lodge which is located in the Yarapa river. On our way, we are going to cross the territory of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and will be able to see some birds. Our guide will explain us about the biodiversity that can be found in this area and the history of the National Park.

Depending on the season it will take us 2 hours or more to reach the Yarapa basin. Once at the entrance of this main tributary of the mighty Amazon, we will see small family groups of gray and pink river dolphins. The water coloration of this river will tell us that we are entering the wildlife area and will be able to see more birds, insects and villagers fishing by the river shore.

Once in our lodge, we will be assigned into our cabins and will have a little rest while waiting for lunch. We also have a hammock place for you to take a nap.

In the afternoon, we are going to have our first excursion: Hiking in the jungle in search of insects, spiders, snakes, mice and experience the most beautiful environment of our rainforest.

 

Dinner will be served by 7 pm and afterwards, we will get ready to go caiman hunting. We will also be able to se some nocturnal birds.

 

 

DAY TWO

We will have to get up early in the morning to go bird watching. We will get to see several bird species and our jungle guide will explain us about them all.

Breakfast will be served as soon as we are back to the lodge.

Fishing poles will be ready and waiting for us to go and catch some piranhas. Of course some other fish species will be caught, but piranhas are our goal.

 

This afternoon, after lunch, we visit the community of Puerto Miguel. A very well organized community, where we will have the opportunity to learn about the local population. We are also going to visit someone’s house hoping to find any sloth, since it is very common to find at least one of this beautiful mammal after the rainy season is over.  We will head to the entrance of the Yarapa River to see pink dolphins and swim with them. Sunset in this area is really splendid.

Tonight, after dinner, we are going to have a brief night excursion to see tarantulas, scorpions, bull frogs and if lucky, some snakes and opposims. We will have time to tell some jungle stories and legends.

 

DAY THREE

We will need to get up early in the morning to get into our boat and head to “Uvos Lake” where we will see monkeys on the trees. Several monkey species can be found in this place.

On our way back, we will make a brief stop at Puerto Miguel to see the giant Lily Pads, the largest aquatic plant in the world.

 

Lunch will be served at the lodge.

 

We will pack and get ready to head back to Iquitos.

On our way back, we will make a brief stop at Vista Alegre village to learn about a large Camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia) plantation they have, and also to see the conservation project they are running to increase the population of Pacas (Cuniculus paca) in the wild. They also have a butterfly farm where we can learn about the metamorphosis of different butterflies.

Afterwads, we will go on our way to Iquitos.
