ITINERARY
DAY ONE
We will depart from Iquitos very early in the morning to the city of Nauta where the speedboat we will be waiting for us to take us to the community of San Jose de Samiria. After four hours navigating the waters of the Maranon River we will arrive to our destination. We will meet the main authorities of this community and to the group of people who work in the protection and conservation of endangered species. Lunch will be served at a villager’s house and in the afternoon we will head to “Cocha Yarina” where we will camp. Our tour will be through a narrow river that is home to the giant river otters and if we are lucky we will be able to see them from our boat. We will also see Hoatzins, which are beautiful birds with a very distinguished plumage. Some monkeys and lizards can be seen along the way.
Our campsite will be the shore of a huge lake, which reflects the beauty of the forest. In this lake you can hear the paiche when it comes to the surface to take oxygen. Sometimes and with a little patience we get to see them.
In the evening after dinner, we will make our first night tour in search of caimans. We can also find tarantulas, insects, frogs, snakes and night birds.
DAY TWO
We will take breakfast in the morning and then we will head to the place where they discovered the remains of ancient tombs. Our guide will explain us about the culture and the beliefs we have. He will also explain about the discovery and the things that happened after that. In this excursion, we will see some remains of pottery that belonged to this culture.
In the afternoon we will have a hike through the forest to learn about the main medicinal plants and those that are used for the construction of the houses. We will visit some places where you can see giant trees. You can also see some animals, birds and insects. Before sunset, we will take our fishing rods to try to catch some piranhas.
Tonight we have a walk through the forest in search of bigger animals. With no doubt we will be able to see night mice, spiders, insects, giant frogs and snakes. Our guide will tell us a legend about the Peruvian jungle.
DAY THREE
We will head back to San Jose of Samiria at sunrise, where we will have breakfast. We will say good-bye to the population and aboard our boat to go to the community of San Martin of Tipishca. In half-hour trip we will be at the mouth of the Samiria River, the main gate to enter to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. We will make a brief stop at the Control Point to register our entrance to this protected area. We will learn about the work the rangers do, the zoning of the National Reserve and afterwards we will continue our trip to San Martin de Tipishca.
A huge lake, that looks like a mirror of glass is that we will have in front of us, reflecting the flocks of great egrets and cocoi herons flying above. Kingfishers will go flying by the shore while the river dolphins come out again and again to the surface to breathe, or perhaps to welcome us to this wonderful natural paradise. We will arrive to the community at lunchtime. We will have a little rest for a little while, and then we will visit the community to learn about the local population. We'll talk to some of the main authorities.
Also we will walk through a very rustic road that will take us to the next community. Along our way we will see some farms and birds, insects, flowers and with a little bit of luck some monkeys. Our small wooden boat will be waiting to take us back to the community of San Martin. On the shores of the lake, we will be able to see one of the largest trees in the area, the Ciba tree. Pink dolphins will be around us and we will be ready to swim with them while we contemplate a beautiful sunset.
DAY FOUR
In the morning we will take our small wooden boat to navigate one of the most beautiful tributaries that will lead us to a splendid lake where you will be able to see macaws, toucans, cormorants, horned screamers, herons, and monkeys. We will arrive at a very remote lagoon from where will begin our hike through a primary forest.
We will walk in the forest to reach the Aguajales, a palm swamp, where tapirs are used to be in order to eat the fruit of this palm tree. A wide variety of trees will be found in the area and our guide will explain us about them. We will also harvest the Palm Heart to prepare a delicious salad and also drink water from the Cat’s claw vine.
We will have lunch in the middle of the jungle and then we will start heading back to the village. In the afternoon we will be able to have a moment of sport with the villagers and after sunset a small farewell ceremony in which we will have the opportunity to witness the typical dances of the Cocama Cocamilla group. A ceremony that shows our ancestral traditions and the beauty of our rich heritage.
DAY FIVE
Very early in the morning we will take our boat to go to the place where we will board the speedboat to Nauta. It will be a tiring journey after spending 4 days 3 nights in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
* The arrival in Iquitos will be before sunset.
