ITINERARY
DAY ONE
We will depart from Iquitos very early in the morning to the city of Nauta where the speedboat we will be waiting for us to take us to the community of San Jose de Samiria. After four hours navigating the waters of the Maranon River we will arrive to our destination. We will meet the main authorities of this community and to the group of people who work in the protection and conservation of endangered species. Lunch will be served at a villager’s house and in the afternoon we will head to “Cocha Yarina” where we will camp. Our tour will be through a narrow river that is home to the giant river otters and if we are lucky we will be able to see them from our boat. We will also see Hoatzins, which are beautiful birds with a very distinguished plumage. Some monkeys and lizards can be seen along the way.
Our campsite will be the shore of a huge lake, which reflects the beauty of the forest. In this lake you can hear the paiche when it comes to the surface to take oxygen. Sometimes and with a little patience we get to see them.
In the evening after dinner, we will make our first night tour in search of caimans. We can also find tarantulas, insects, frogs, snakes and night birds.
DAY TWO
We will take breakfast in the morning and then we will head to the place where they discovered the remains of ancient tombs. Our guide will explain us about the culture and the beliefs we have. He will also explain about the discovery and the things that happened after that. In this excursion, we will see some remains of pottery that belonged to this culture.
In the afternoon we will have a hike through the forest to learn about the main medicinal plants and those that are used for the construction of the houses. We will visit some places where you can see giant trees. You can also see some animals, birds and insects. Before sunset, we will take our fishing rods to try to catch some piranhas.
Tonight we have a walk through the forest in search of bigger animals. With no doubt we will be able to see night mice, spiders, insects, giant frogs and snakes. Our guide will tell us a legend about the Peruvian jungle.
DAY THREE
We will wake up with the singing chorus of sparrows to go to pick up our fishing net. Also will be a good opportunity for piranha fishing with our fishing rod. After breakfast we will have to get ready and start heading back to the village where we will have lunch and spend our last night.
In the afternoon we will be able to have a moment of sport with the villagers and after sunset a small farewell ceremony in which we will have the opportunity to witness the typical dances of the Cocama Cocamilla group. A ceremony that shows our ancestral traditions and the beauty of our rich heritage.
DAY FOUR
Very early in the morning we will take our boat to go to the place where we will board the speedboat to Nauta. It will be a tiring journey after spending 4 days 3 nights in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
* The arrival in Iquitos will be before sunset.
