ITINERARY

DAY ONE

We will depart from Iquitos very early in the morning to the city of Nauta where the speedboat will be waiting to take us to the community of San Martin de Tipishca. After four hours navigating the waters of the Maranon River we will get to the entrance of the Samiria river, this is the first control point of the Samiria basin. We will register ourselves to enter this area and continue our journey to get to the community of San Martin de Tipishca.

After settling in, we will take lunch and have some free time. In the afternoon we'll have a walk around the community to learn about the surroundings and the village organization. Our tour guide will provide a brief historical overview of the people and we will visit houses to see some of the culture and customs. We will then walk down a small trail in order to see insects, birds and if we are lucky, some monkeys. We will also have the opportunity to see one of the most enormous trees in our region: The Ceiba tree.

Our return to the community will be in a small wooden boat. We will have time to take in the beautiful landscape and sunset. There may be Pink Dolphins that come to the water’s surface. We may also see birds such as kingfishers, seagulls, toucans, herons, horned screamers, jacanas, hawks, oropendolas and others. Sometimes it is possible to see sloths hanging from the tree branches.

DAY TWO

We will leave the community before dawn and have breakfast on the boat. The sunrise is very unique in this part of the amazon and we will take a few minutes to take it all in. We will then navigate the black waters of the Yanayacu River. This will be another opportunity to see some river dolphins. There may be monkeys by the river shore looking for food among the foliage. Birds such as aninga, cormorants, tiger heron, white heron, macaw, parrots, toucans, hawks, etc. may also been seen. After three hours on the river we will reach Posa Shiringa where we will make fire in order to prepare our lunch.

After lunch we will take our wooden boat through the Varadero –a trail used as shortcut from the Yanayacu to the Samiria River. Our boat will be pulled by land through the jungle, using the techniques of the native people from the community. We will arrive at Cocha Huishto in less than one hour. This is heartland of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. This is the perfect place to learn how ancient people caught the paiche fish and hunted manatees using fences within the water.

We will set up our campsite and tents before dark, and after dinner, we will have a walk through the same trail to observe big mammals, insects and amphibians, nocturnal birds and snakes.

DAY THREE

Very early we shall hear the howler monkeys, horned screamers and other birds welcome the new day with their songs. We will tour this small lake to see birds and some other animals. We will head through the mouth of Huishto stream until we reach the Samiria river. On this journey we will be able to see other species of herons, hawks, falcons, monkeys and small river turtles that come to the surface to sunbathe.

We will take lunch at Yarinal. This is a splendid place formed by enormous areas of yarina palm trees. The leaves are used to thatch houses and the seeds are used to prepare crafts. We will do a short hike in search of Cat´s claw to drink its water. Cat's Claw is a medicinal plant whose healing properties have revolutionized the world. We can also see the main species of trees that are used for the construction in the communities.

We will continue our trip downstream and will arrive at the Samiria river around 6pm where we will camp. We will have dinner and then depart in search of caimans (a type of crocodile). This will also be a good time to fish with fishing nets and spears on the banks of the river. During this time our guide will tell us one of the legends of our rainforest.

DAY FOUR

There is nothing more beautiful than waking up in the Rainforest. This area has such a large biodiversity and is one of the largest protected areas. We will be able to see large mammals such as peccaries, capybaras, tapir, and possibly Jaguars. Giant river otters or river wolf can be found in the small creeks or in the middle of the flooded forest.

We will eat breakfast and then navigate the waters of the Samiria River. We will take a shortcut that will lead us to Atun Cocha. This trip will take four hours. This will be our strategic place for fishing piranhas and bass. The alligators that inhabit this lake may be seen from our boat when they go out to sunbathe. Toucans, macaws, parrots, hawks, king vulture, and the exotic hoatzin may also be seen in our tour.

We will have what was caught in the river for lunch. Then we'll take a short hike to see medicinal plants that are traditionally used by village populations. We will stay overnight at the PV2 Tacsha where the rangers will explain their work to us. Depending on the season we will be able to be part of the groups that go out and collect the eggs of chelonians (Turtles).

DAY FIVE

After breakfast we will start our return to the community. On the way we will travel into Arturo Posa, mythological place for the Cocamas that live in San Martin de Tipishca. We will stay here for an hour and a half and we will see large families of pink dolphins that inhabit this spot of the Samiria basin. This will be one of the most unforgettable scenes of our expedition.

Lunch will be served in San Martin of Tipishca. In the afternoon we will spend time playing a sport with the Native people and be able to interact with them.

In the evening we will have a farewell ceremony in which we will have the opportunity to witness the typical dances of the Cocama Cocamilla group. This ceremony shows the ancestral traditions and the beauty of their rich heritage.

DAY SIX

Very early in the morning we will take our boat to meet up with the speed boat that will take us to Nauta. It will be a weary travel after five days of adventure in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

We will have lunch in Nauta and take taxis to our hotel in Iquitos.

We hope you have enjoyed your trip and share the experience you had with us.

* The arrival in Iquitos will be before sunset.
